The Importance of Practicing Self-Care During Tough Times
There is no doubt that many people are going through a tough time at the moment. When we celebrated the start of a brand new year on January 1st, nobody could have predicted what would unravel in the months ahead. With millions of us adapting to a ‘new normal,’ the importance of self-care has come to the foreground. If you’re finding life difficult, here are some simple steps to take.
Prioritize rest and recovery
Many of us complained that there weren’t enough hours in the day before the start of the stay-at-home orders.
While the pandemic has been incredibly challenging, having more time has been a silver lining for some. Rest and recovery are essential for optimal physical and mental health, but the reality is that most people don’t get enough good quality sleep.
If you do experience sleep troubles, try and get into a routine, which affords time to relax and unwind in the evenings, and encourages you to go to bed and get up at the same time each day.
As well as getting enough sleep, it’s also hugely beneficial to make time for hobbies that make you feel calm and provide serenity and tranquility. Try picking up a new hobby like creative activities, reading, listening to music, arts and crafts, cooking or baking.
Understand the importance of protecting mental health
When we talk about self-care, it’s easy to focus on eating well and working out.
While these steps are beneficial for physical and mental health, the body often receive more attention than the mind. Even if you are happy and content, it’s critical to understand the importance of mental well-being.
There are things you can do to promote good mental health, reduce stress and anxiety, increase confidence and to maintain a positive mindset.
Try setting yourself goals, thinking about what you are grateful for and learning how to manifest what you want.
Be proactive when it comes to working towards objectives. Have confidence in your own abilities and strengths and try to maintain a sense of rationality and perspective. At the moment, life is very hard for many of us, but there are lots of things we cannot change. Concentrate on the elements that you can control and adapt.
Move your body
Exercise is one of the most powerful natural remedies for improved health and wellbeing.
If you’re not used to exercising, you don’t have to embark upon a dramatic lifestyle overhaul to move more. Simple things like going for a walk every day, cycling instead of driving, and enjoying active hobbies can make a huge difference.
Aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week and take advantage of opportunities to get out into the open air. When you put your muscles through a workout and your heart rate increases, your body will release endorphins and the levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain will rise.
Times are tough for many, and self-care has never been more important. If you’re struggling, or you’re looking for ways to protect your mental wellbeing and boost your physical health, take these tips on board.
