How To Get Your Clothes SOLD On Poshmark + eBay (Income Opportunity!)
I’ve been selling on Poshmark and eBay for just over 2 years now and just recently started on Mercari. What stared out as a way to clear my closet quickly became a way for me to get extra money in a relatively easy way.
I turned my closet clearing venture into a small side hustle within a couple of months. By visiting local thrift stores and asking family for clothes they would’ve donated, I was able to get a decent amount of inventory and start flipping these clothes for pretty good money. (This is a story for another time!)
When selling clothes (or anything around your home) on eBay, Mercari and Posh, there are some things you should keep in mind.
Pictures are everything
When you shop online, what draws you to an item? The pictures!
Your pictures should be brightly lit and clearly display what it is you’re selling. Use natural light when you can - I’ve found this to be the best!
Grab a hangar, find a well lit wall and hang your item on the wall using a push pin. That way there is a solid colored background and no distractions in the photo.
You don’t need a fancy camera. You can take the pictures right from your phone.
*When I decided to turn my project into a side hustle, I invested in a dress form and inexpensive studio lights like these :
If you’re just clearing you closet and don’t blame on making a consistent side income from this journey, PLEASE do not purchase these extras. Use what you have on hand and I promise it will be plenty good enough!
Price competitively
You may have an emotional attachment to an item and feel as though it is worth a certain price. You have to remember, the customer doesn’t have this attachment and wants the best deal.
If you want your item to sell quickly, do some research! What is your item selling for?
Poshmark and eBay show you what has sold and the price it sold for - a great tool to utilize!
Don’t give the item away for free, but you need to keep price comparison in mind.
Descriptions + titles matter
Your titles should be straight to the point and give details like brand, style and size.
Take advantage of all the space these apps give you to describe your item. You want to list the features you find important or note if the item has a flaw.
Please inspect your item before you list it and be HONEST about the flaws it has. You’d be surprised how many flawed items will still sell! People like honesty.
Someone once told me to describe an item as if a person cannot see the image.
A solid description and title also help with search engines. They’re able to recommend your item better if your descriptions are packed with the details.
The more the merrier
The more items you have listed in your shop, the better! So if you’re going to throw one thing on the site, might as well go through your home and find other things you no longer need or want as well.
More items = more opportunity to be found!
Share your listings
This one is Poshmark specific.
If you’re not familiar with Poshmark, they have a feature that allows you to share your listings. This basically means it takes your listings and moves them to the top of that search inquiry.
So if I’m looking for Levi’s, the first shown listings will be the ones that are most recently added or shared.
If you don’t share your listings consistently they will fall to the bottom of the barrel and have less of a chance of being seen.
This may sound time consuming, but I promise you it is so quick and easy to do - especially on mobile!
Just get started
Your listings do not need to be perfect.
Read that again, please.
Done is better than perfect when you’re trying to get your listings up and ready.
If you’re just trying to clear your closet, do not focus so much on the little details. Just make sure you have well lit pictures, a solid title and an informative description.
