How I Supported My Toddler Through Winter Illnesses *Naturally*

Nothing in this post is medical advice. This is just the process I took to support my daughter through illness with a natural approach.

We got hit back to back with illness in our home this winter. It started out with RSV for 2 weeks and after 1 week of feeling better, BOOM - Covid.

My daughter is only 2, so I was extremely concerned with how her little body would handle such big illnesses so close together.

I prefer to do things the natural way unless I feel like I absolutely have to create a space for conventional medicine to come in. Luckily RSV didn’t call for any, but I did resort to Tylenol twice for our week long Covid stint since her fever got above 104.

Side note, I’m not normally fearful of fevers. I understand that they are the body’s way of making things inhospitable for the virus and helping to flush everything out. But being raised on conventional meds without this understanding, I do still sometimes get fearful when numbers get a little too high for comfort.

With all that being said, here are the things that I did to naturally support my daughter’s body through Covid.

My holy grail book that I’ve really come to love is, ‘Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child.’

It covers a ton of childhood ailments while giving you both a conventional and more natural way of treating your child. I’ve had the book a limited time but I’ve already been nose deep several times for several things we’re dealing with or have dealt with in the past. I can definitely see this book getting passed down to my kids when they become parents.

The following items are things that I used to help support her body through Covid based on things I’ve read in the book, naturopaths we’ve seen and other little tid-bits I’ve learned along my motherhood journey.

Every morning I brewed a cup of chamomile tea and mixed half with her first cup of water. This helps relax the body and keeps the nerves at bay. She hardly noticed it was in her water to begin with, but if your child is finnicky (and older than 1) you can try mixing a little honey in to sweeten the deal.

Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry syrup is a staple in our home when any of us start getting sick. I whip it out at the first sign of symptoms. Luckily my daughter actually enjoys the taste. We used Sambucol this time, but have tried Mary Ruth’s as well. Mary Ruth’s is a mix of other berries as well, so the flavor is a little sweeter if you have a picky babe.

Oscillococcinum

This was my first time trying this product. The name is a joke to pronounce, but I noticed it helped my hubby to fight the illness off a little quicker than the last time we had it.

The book I mentioned above gives full doses for everything that I’ll be mentioning in this post, including this! Which was super helpful as I’m barely beginning to dabble in homeopathy.

Peppermint Oil

When my babe’s fever got to a point where she was clearly uncomfortable, I applied VERY diluted peppermint oil mixed with lotion or coconut oil to the bottoms of her feet.

Peppermint oil does have claims of being linked to seizures. If you’re uncomfortable even dabbling with it, you can always use spearmint as it is more child friendly.

I really trust the quality in Plant Therapy’s oils, so I felt ok using this technique sparingly.

Use this technique at your own discretion.

TummyGize

The beginning of the virus brought on some tummy issues. We rubbed a diluted mixture of TummyGize and some chamomile lotion below her belly button to ease any discomfort and get her feeling more comfy again.

Magnesium / Epsom Salt Baths

An easy way to cool her off when things got too hot was putting her in a warm bath with epsom salt or magnesium flakes. This helps bring the body temperature down a bit naturally.

She actually loved taking baths during her illness which really surprised me because last time she was definitely not about it.

Raw Honey

Raw honey is great for sore throats and is also a great cough suppressant if your little one is too young for cough medicines.

Vitamin C

The last thing we did was small doses of vitamin C. These are the capsules that I take personally so to make the doses smaller I would break them up and fraction it out.

Again, the dosing for everything can be found in Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child. I seriously cannot recommend this book enough.

Again again, none of this is medical advice. This is just an educational post about what I did to naturally support my daughter through Covid. You do what is best and feels right for your daughter and do not take advice from strangers on the internet.
