When I was younger I despised reading. I couldn't sit still long enough to get a couple sentences down. When I did finally read, I had no idea what I had just read. Now that I'm older, I can definitely indulge in my fair share of self-help books! Hahah.
One book in particular has been my all-time favorite. So much so, that I read it twice! Well, listened to it twice. Some things haven't changed with age. One of them being I much prefer to be read stories than actually doing the reading myself! So Audible read me this really awesome book twice, would be a more accurate statement.
I really, really appreciate this book and I give a lot of credit to the author for writing a series of incredible books.
Get to the point - what is the book?
The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom
This amazing book, by Don Miguel Ruiz, is by far the most incredible book that I have ever read.
If you have a tendency to take things personal. This book is for you.
If you often feel you are to blame for core issues. This book is for you.
If you are in a dark place and need a reminder of your purpose. This book is for you
This book single-handedly got me out of one of the biggest funks of my life. It gave me all of the tools that I needed to center myself and really grow as an individual.
This is a Toltec guide to living a happier, more grounded lifestyle. It goes through the exact steps you should take to really get your mind right. And I can honestly say that this way of thinking changed my entire life. The Toltec culture, which Ruiz mentions throughout all of his books, is a culture of artisans and spiritual beings founded in Mexico before the Aztecs. Luckily, Don Miguel Ruiz is one source that has continued to pass along the interesting ways of this culture.
The beginning of the book confused the heck out of me. It's got a deep Native American vibe and talks about things that I definitely didn't understand until I listened to it the second time around. Even if you don't understand the meaning behind it, you can definitely appreciate the beautiful imagery that Don Miguel Ruiz paints with his words. It's awesome.
The rest of the book is super easy to follow along with. This man has a serious way with words. He'll make you think in ways that you've never thought before. Life will be put in a whole new perspective when you're finished.
The book obviously goes over what exactly the four agreements are. These are agreements you make to yourself in order to ground yourself and live your happiest life.
The four agreements are as follows:
Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best.
I definitely don't want to go into too much detail, because this is a book you definitely need to read for yourself. Don't just rely on reviews of it. Don Miguel Ruiz goes into so much depth on each of these agreements and makes them so easy to relate to.
While they may sound obvious, you need to hear how he words why each agreement is so essential to a happier life. If you apply these agreements to every situation in your life, clarity will come so much faster.
Coming from someone who normally can't sit still long enough to read a newspaper article - I really hope that you read this book and love it as much as I do. It really has changed the way I view life and people.
I'm forever grateful for this author. He's got a whole series of books that are all equally as amazing as this one. I'll link to some of my other favorites at the very bottom of this post.
