Down time is one of the most important things you can implement when you're trying to grow a business. Just like any other job, you want to keep your work life separate from your personal time. No one wants to be working 24/7.
I've personally noticed that when I don't have enough down time I start to feel the burn out, which I talk about in this post here, a whole lot quicker. My moods and overall well-being also shift majorly if I don't step in and schedule out some down time.
I want to start off this post by mentioning something so important:
Down time is not unproductive.
Some of my best moments come from down time - best ideas, best a-ha moments, best mind clearing sessions.
Down time is one of the most productive things you can do for yourself.
Why it's important
Down time is important for a couple of reasons.
For me, giving myself a break from the business I run, my day job and just the normal stresses of life is crucial to my personal well-being. If I spend too much time investing in something else and start to neglect myself, my moods drastically shift. (And not in a good way!)
Another reason some down time is greatly appreciated is because when you step away from something you get to see the bigger picture. If you get your nose out of that computer or note pad, your brain gets a chance to release from the stress. In turn, you may notice that you get a brilliant idea that you may never have thought of if you didn't remove yourself from the situation temporarily.
Our lives are meant to be lived fully - not with our heads so far up our you-know-what's that we forget what the outdoors looks like!
What to do during down time?
This is totally up to you! Sometimes a break may look as simple as binge watching Netflix for a bit (not too long though. don't get lazy!) or taking some time to melt into some self love practices.
This break is whatever you want it to be - just take the damn break already, geez!
When you're in the middle of a planned down time, do not work! I repeat, DO.NOT.WORK.
You scheduled this time for yourself so that you can get away from the hustle and bustle of your lifestyle. Obviously if you have a great idea during this time, write it down. We can't risk losing those. But you do not need to execute it in that moment. You can make a note of it and tackle the hell out of it when your break time is over with.
You need to live your life.
Your life can not be solely based around work or mundane tasks. I understand that you can get caught up and lost in the clock, but do not let a work-filled schedule run your life. You only get one!
You can't let awesome life experiences pass you up because you're choosing to be a workaholic or busy body.
As working women we definitely put a lot of our hearts and souls into the tasks that need to be accomplished, but we've got to stop letting our soul-sucking tasks become our lives. We are still human beings who are yearning for life experience. So go out there and get it!
At the end of the day, down time is a way for us to reconnect with ourselves. This time is vital in us living our best lives and being able to handle all of the crazy shit that life throws at us! You deserve time that is spent solely focusing on you. So get it.
