As humans we think about three major points of our lives; the past, present and future.
I'm sure you've heard the quote, "If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present" by Lao Tzu. This man created Taoism and was one of the most well known Chinese philosophers.
His words make so much sense. We shouldn't get depressed by living in the past or anxious over living in the future. We're totally missing out on the bigger picture of this current moment if we're stuck living in a different time frame.
Why do we stress about the past?
This is still something I'm trying to discover, but I've gotten a pretty good grasp on it over the years.
The past is where the core of our entire existence lives. Everything that has happened has morphed us into this incredible being that we are today. Of course we want to relive moments or have tendencies to rethink about things that have happened.
The past becomes an unhealthy place to live when you can no longer live for the present moment because previous experiences are causing you so much trouble. Things happen and life moves on. Always remember what the past has done to help propel you into your current version of yourself, but view it more in that sense versus dwelling in it.
We need to take the past as a lesson. It's taught us all that we know, but we have a bigger focus now and that is this current moment.
All of your down times, failures, successes, etc. are there to remind you of how far you've come. They're not there for you to dwell on or use as excuses to be held back.
Why do we focus on the future?
This was my core issue when I first started this journey. I was so focused on the future that I didn't appreciate anything in this current moment. I was so deeply invested in who I want to become and what I want from life that I forgot to be grateful for all that I already am and all that I already have.
The future is fun to think about. It's fun to dream and plan the life that we've always wanted. Know when it becomes excessive and when you need to regain focus in this current moment. The future is inevitably happening, so let it happen.
Forcing it or being in a rush to get there is not going to make it happen any faster. And you're wasting precious time not living for all that is already surrounding you.
How does this relate to the bigger picture?
The past is what has morphed us and the future is what we're looking forward to. But the present is where we can see the bigger picture. Focus on this current moment and all the lessons that it has to offer.
Don't waste time stressing out about time phases that you are not in. You are here, now. Focus on that. The present moment holds the most precious journey. You will miss the gratitude you can feel when you just slow down and appreciate this moment for all that it's worth. You can never get this day, this hour, this minute back. So live in it fully and see it for what it's worth.
The present is where you will feel the most at peace - if you allow yourself.
The next time you're feeling overwhelmed or dwelling, just take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that you are right here, right now.
The future is coming and the past has taught you what you needed to know. Grow with it now!
